Ammonia in the large intestine of herbivores.

چکیده
I. The object was to investigate the importance of urea as a source of ammonia in the large intestine of herbivores. Urea was present in small intestinal contents of slaughtered horses in concentrations similar to those in blood but, in the small intestine of slaughtered sheep, the urea was less than in blood. 2. There was little ammonia in small intestinal contents of slaughtered horses but considerable ammonia was present in small intestinal contents of slaughtered sheep. The ammonia in small intestinal contents of the slaughtered sheep was probably formed from urea, as ileal contents taken from a sheep with an ileal cannula contained considerable urea and little ammonia. 3. The ammonia concentration in caecal contents of sheep was related to the concentration of urea in blood except when ileal contents were prevented from entering the caecum. 4. Ileal digesta of sheep contained more free amino nitrogen than did caecal digesta. 5 . Ammonia was absorbed more rapidly than water from the caecum of sheep. The rate of absorption was related to the concentration of ammonia in the caecum.

Contributions of microbes in vertebrate gastrointestinal tract to production and conservation of nutrients.
The vertebrate gastrointestinal tract is populated by bacteria and, in some species, protozoa and fungi that can convert dietary and endogenous substrates into absorbable nutrients. Because of a neutral pH and longer digesta retention time, the largest bacterial populations are found in the hindgut or large intestine of mammals, birds, reptiles, and adult amphibians and in the foregut of a few ...

The aim of the current study was to investigate the histological and histochemical characteristics of large and small intestines of sea snake, Hydrophis cyanocinctus. Six adult sea snakes were collected from Minab beaches, located near the sea of Oman, in November, euthanized with chloroform, dissected and alimentary canal removed, tissues preparaed for sectioning and staining with Hematoxylin ...

The aim of this study was to investigate the interactions between rat intestine decellularized scaffold and human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells. Rat large intestine was dissected in fragments and decellularized by physicochemical methods. The scaffolds were loaded by human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells expressing green fluorescent protein. Microscopic sections were prepared fr...

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is found in cattle farms and can live in the intestine of healthy cattle. Mostcases of human illnesses including nonbloody diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndromecan be traced, either directly or indirectly, to cattle. One strategy for reducing the risk of EnterohemorrhagicEscherichia coli (EHEC) infections in human is to reduce the prevalence of inf...

The aim of this study was to detect the regional and mucosal distribution of endocrine cells that secrete gulcagon, somatostatin, Chyholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8), serotonin, secretin, substance P (SP) and histamine in the small and large intestine of New Zealand white rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.) using immunohistochemical peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) method. It was found that most of the im...
